Little Gems: 21

Little Gems

Life has been so busy. SO BUSY. Iceland already feels like ten years ago. August has been a month of cat sitting. That’s right; I’ve become a cat sitter. It’s something I decided to do for a bit of extra cash and cos, ya know, cats. It didn’t really occur to me that I’d actually get bookings or that, when I did, it would take up a lot of my free time or I’d be walking 10 miles a day (or so my app tells me…) but adding more exercise and more cats into one’s day is no bad thing, even if I was tired as fuck.

It does mean that I am so behind on studying for my course and I have so many blog posts in mind and sweet jesus, that pile of life admin is looking pretty hefty *runs and hides*.

Anyhoo, the little gems of recent weeks.

1) Travels. Budapest, Iceland… oh maaan, it was all so dreamy. I’ll get it all into blog posts eventually!

2) Coconut oil. Um, like, HI THERE. I finally cracked and spent a tenner (um, what?) on a tub of coconut oil and it may just be the nicest tasting/smelling oil that has ever entered my kitchen. Also you can put it onto your face. And in your hair. Just to fuck with your mind.

3) Thanks to G being more on it with the Harry Potter news then I am (and that, my friends, is a true sign of how serious the tiredness is), I was alerted to the performance of Philosopher’s Stone accompanied by a LIVE ORCHESTRA at the Royal Albert Hall next year and spontaneously bought tickets as a very early 21st birthday present for the sibling. What with that, Cursed Child, the Fantastic Beasts film and the new books… it is all go in the HP universe. WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE.

4) Speaking of which, I’m re-reading the books for the eight millionth time. Nope, never gonna bore of them. I’m offended you thought I would.

5) My girls. Despite being tired, despite knowing there was hundreds of things I should be doing, despite bloody bank holiday traffic, I drove down to Oxfordshire on Saturday and spent an all round sexy evening with my beautiful girls and the world’s biggest cheese board. I haven’t done everything that I wanted to get done this weekend but there’s not one little inkling of regret. Sometimes you need your oldest friends and an eff load of cheese to soothe your soul.

6) Yerma. OH EM GEE. This play basically destroyed me. The whole thing blew my mind and Billie Piper was astonishingly good. I cried/sat in shock the entire way home... and then spent the remainder of the evening looking up fertility clinics but what play doesn’t have that affect?  It’s gut-wrenching & haunts you at 2am in the morning... but would absolutely recommend.

7) Going to the cinema on my own. Yeah so, I’ve never actually done this before and I’m not sure what took me so long. Last Sunday, I spontaneously decided I wanted to go see the new Star Trek film and just took myself down to our local cinema (which is totally snazzy if you’re ever in St Albans btw – more here) and treated myself to an early evening showing accompanied by a tub of jelly beans. As much as I love going to see a film with G or my pals, there was something strangely therapeutic about going on my own. I’ve made a promise to myself to make it a regular occurrence.

8) Coming home from Iceland gave me such a renewed appreciation for mine and G’s life in St Albans. It’s all pretty grand, I gotta say.

9)  We went up to York last weekend for my cousin’s wedding  which was so much fun and gave me all the happy family feels <3.

10) Because apparently I can’t stay in one place for too long, it’s time for another trip next weekend. We’re heading back to Festival No. 6 and I am SO READY.

Hope you’ve all had a dandy bank holiday weekend babes :)

A Disposable Camera In The Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon, Iceland

I ummed and ahhhed ahead of our trip to Iceland. How was I gonna document our trip to the Blue Lagoon?! We all know I love to document but taking my phone or camera into water, even in a waterproof carrier, literally does not compute in my brain. Taking a selfie just ain't worth the risk as far as I'm concerned.

And who the heck were all the people just taking their phones in with NO PROTECTION. Like who were these crazy beasts?!

Naaaah.

I went old school big time.

How long has it been since you bought a disposable camera? Do you remember those sweet, sweet days?

I always have this strange fondness towards disposable cameras. That was where it started for me. Before the days of getting down on one knee IN PUBLIC to get the optimum shot, there were the days where I threw a little disposable to my eye and carelessly snapped a moment without the opportunity to delete or perfect, or add an instagram edit afterwards.

I loved it. I loved winding up my little camera and capturing anything and everything. I loved considering whether it was worth taking a photo because I only had a precious 27 to take. I loved the excitement of taking them to be developed and sitting down to properly go through each and every one; the thrill of coming across the ones I'd forgotten I'd taken.

It all started with those lil disposables.

The reason I blew part of my student loan on a digital camera, the reason my iPhone camera roll constantly makes my storage freak out, the reason I taught myself to use a DSLR and the reason I'm saving for an Olympus Pen because I 'need' a more portable 'on-the-go' camera.

The pictures from the disposable camera I took into the Blue Lagoon, compared to photos I can take these days, are poor quality. But they capture the day. They capture the moment right there and then, because there was no opportunity to take them again. They capture how bright it was, how the steam swirled around us, they capture the laughter; the silliness and the fun that occurred.

And they re-created all those feelings I had as a child, when I fell in love with having a camera in hand.

An Iceland-induced calm

Iceland

I may or may not have just broken my toe tripping over the exercise bike.

Man I was feeling so on it today as well.

I went for a swim STRAIGHT AWAY this morning. Like I went from bed to the leisure centre without stopping anywhere in between (well, cept for the loo). Exercise before 10am in the morning.

What even.

And I had the dreamiest of lunches. Goat’s cheese, avocado and sun-dried tomato pesto on a toasted bagel. Have you ever heard of anything sexier? Nope, didn’t think so. But, yeah, then I tripped on the foot of the exercise bike and had to eat several chocolate digestives to get me through the pain. So that’s that.

Heya pals. I’m back.

I landed back in Britain over a week ago and it feels like it has taken that long to finally adjust to the fact that I am no longer in Iceland. I say adjust. More like I’ve stopped living in denial.

IT WAS SO DAMN GOOD YOU HAVE NO IDEA.

Aaaaand that’s outta my system.

I have a fair few Iceland posts coming your way but in the meantime, I’m about to brain dump on ya.

So our second hotel in Iceland had this quirky, totally adorable little sitting room area. Like your very own cosy living room. With vintage chairs & sofas and a fireplace, and a chess board and a view of the harbour and sea, and calming, quiet music playing in the background.

This is where I sat on my own on the last night in Iceland. At half 10, the sky was blue, pink, purple and a little orange. Totally dreamy.

I was newly showered and in comfy clothes, with slightly aching muscles. But that kind of achy where you just give em a stretch periodically and it feels comforting?

I was writing in my holiday diary and just considering that it was time to stop and go read Harry Potter (illustrated addition) in bed before going to sleep and pretending the alarm wouldn't go off at 5am or that I had a day of flying ahead of me. Cos who needs that?

I felt so, so calm.

I did not want to disrupt this calm. And I knew that I would. The moment that the 5am alarm went off and I was forced bleary eyed to head to the airport and wait to fly which makes me feel ill and bluurgh. And then deal with my holiday washing and work emails and going back to the effing grind.

Getting on a sodding commuter train. WHY.

I kept asking myself ‘why do I never feel this calm? Like ever?!’

I basically got emotional at the lack of pure calmness in my life.

I KNOW everyone feels calmer when they’re away. I mean, duh, you’re away from all your responsibilities.

But, ya know, I wish I could bottle up some of that calm and keep it for when I need it. For times when I haven’t got the luxury of wandering around Iceland being all like HOLY MOTHER OF GOD LOOK AT THAT WATERFALL.

A few weeks back, I had what you might call, a lightbulb moment. I think I was planning on blogging about it but then, lol, decided to randomly go to Budapest. No regrets.

Basically, I suddenly realised that I didn’t know what I was supposed to be aiming for. In life.

I realised that I was doing alright, that I’d got myself into a pretty sweet place in life. But that I was pushing myself to do something because I felt like I should be working towards the next step. Only I didn’t know what the next step was.

Does that make sense or am I just talking utter shite?

It occurred to me that I had spent my entire life aiming for something, working towards something. Even as a kid, when I was running around the playground (lol, remember when I used to run?), I knew that I was working towards the end of year 4, and that year 5 would follow after that and year 6 after that and so on and so on.

You started working towards flipping Year Six SATS at the age of 10 (which, just FYI, is totally unnecessary) and then there’s more SATs, and GCSEs and A Levels and all the other utter crap forced upon you at school (ya know like social pressure and underage drinking). Then, woohoo, you made it to uni and spend three years working towards that shiny degree and then you leave and uh oh now time for full time employment and, um, living with my mum, and like why do I only have 1p in my bank account?

But now, well, I’m good. I have made it through the post-graduation years relatively successfully.

I have a steady salary that pops into my bank account each month.

I have solid friends; the kind that are there for a laugh and the kind who will drop everything to carry you through a crisis.

I’m in a long term relationship. A healthy long term relationship. You know, where you talk and laugh and support each other and where he isn’t a total knob.

I live in a two-bed flat in the city I’ve always wanted to live in. Some nights, I even include vegetables in the dinner I cook for myself.

I’m doing it. I’m adulting.

SO WHY WAS I CONSTANTLY FREAKING THE FUCK OUT?!

And I think it was because we have spent our whole lives up to this point knowing what the next step is and working towards it.

And now… now we gotta figure it out by ourselves.

NOBODY PANIC.

When I write it down; the basic details of my life right now, I’m like hey guuuurl, you ain’t doing too bad there. Yet I spend half my life panicking. Not like outwardly so, but a mild panic that continuously bubbles under the surface. Because I don’t know what the plan is now. I don’t have a career plan; should I have a career plan? I don’t even know what I want from my working life (apart from some dolla and flexible working hours so I can write that damn novel). There are people my age with mortgages and babies and fiancés; should I have that?! Am I too settled? Should I have gone travelling for five years before I did any of this? I should be saving more; but what am I saving for? WHAT’S NEXT LIFE?

Where the fuck did this pressure to constantly be moving, be moving up, come from? Like seriously?
Why do you need a new job when you’ve only been at your current one for just over a year? Why do you think you should have more money than you do? Why does it matter if you don’t have a plan? If you don’t know what you want?

So guess what? It suddenly occurred to me that you don’t have to constantly be moving up or planning your life out.

For the first time, you can just sit back and enjoy the ride. Who cares what anyone else thinks? Who cares if your friends are, supposedly, achieving more than you are? You realise this is the first time that you don’t need to pass some stupid exam to proceed to the next level of life? That someone isn’t telling you what the next step is?

I realised that, if I wanted, I could just be for a while. I am totally, 100%, in charge of all decisions I make.

So that was my realisation. And, for a while, I can’t tell you how much it changed how I felt. I was calmer, less anxious. I felt like some kind of weight has lifted.

But recently, I felt like that weight seems to have dropped back onto my shoulders again.

The problem is, privately, I am a pretty darn anxious person. I try and keep it locked in my head nice and tight because I don’t want to be that person. I mean, who the F does?!

I am easily overwhelmed. And if I’m too busy to remind myself of various tactics to calm myself down, I get worked up into a state of anxiety faster than Harry Potter speeding around the Quidditch pitch on his Firebolt.

My jaw aches from clenching it. I get headaches. I end up staring into space and doing nothing because I don't know where to start. I set myself a number of things to tick off my to-do list in a day but it’s totally unrealistic and then I feel like a failure for not doing everything.
The thing that frustrates me the most is that I know I am being ridiculous. I know perfectly well that I’m being irrational and need to cut it out. But you can’t stop your body physically reacting to something. I can stop worrying and still be subconsciously worrying. My jaw can be clenching for hours before I even realise it’s doing so.

I realise it sounds like I can’t leave the house due to crippling anxiety which couldn’t be further from the truth. This is just a thing that I do. That many people do, I think. I think I hide it and try to ignore it relatively well but I know others can be so overwhelmed by it that it affects their whole life. Which sucks big time.

My issue at the moment is always feeling that I have so much to do and never, ever enough time to even make a decent dent in it. This is partly because my main focuses and ambitions in life are all outside of work. My ‘career’ as you might call it will never be a focus. It will always be a means to an end. Which is irritating because it takes up 35 hours of my week. Selfish or what? But, for some reason, I don’t seem to accept that work takes up a lot of time and that I’ll feel tired at the end of it. It’s like I punish myself for not being more productive in the evening. For not writing for hours, for not doing more studying for my course, for not experimenting with my camera... and for not doing all the other things I want to pursue. And I sit there and feel anxious about it.

Yes, I know, it’s ridiculous. You don’t need to tell me.

I always want to be the best version of myself and somewhere along the way in the last couple of years, I’ve forgotten that that is NOT a daily occurrence. Hey, sometimes it isn’t even a monthly occurrence. I’ve forgotten that it’s okay to not get shit done. It’s okay to run out of time and to feel tired and meh fuck it, let’s eat biscuits and watch old episodes of Location Location Location cos we can’t even be arsed to put a dvd on.

I don’t know if this is even coherent anymore.

But basically, this is what I vowed in Iceland: to remind myself every day that I am doing okay. Heck, I’m doing pretty flippin grand. Life is grand. And I did remember that when we finally arrived back in Sheffield and scooped up the cats and ordered a take-away and caught up on two weeks of Corrie (soz not soz). I remembered that when I headed home to St Albans and saw G and realised how much I’d bloody missed him.

And I vowed to make space for moments of calm. To remember to breathe.

I don’t want to stop trying to do so much right now cos I have so many opportunities that I don’t want to have to choose between. And that’s so flipping marvellous.

But I can’t always be on top. I can’t always have days full of productivity. And even when I do, taking time out to breathe and slow down is so, so important. It keeps that jaw-clenching feeling at bay.

Life is so full and busy and it’s easy to compare yourself to others, and beat yourself up for not being the best version of you even when you’re knackered and can’t sleep because your brain won’t shut the F up. Life doesn’t stop being any less full just because you cut yourself some slack.

We all gotta remember that.

Remind yourself how lucky you are, and how far you’ve already come. Stay calm; you got this.

Off to Iceland

Iceland

WE’RE OFF TO ICELAND.

Yes, right now. Literally as you read this, I’m sat on a train in my best comfy travelling clothes (basically pjs let’s be honest) on my way to Manchester airport and being that person who hops onto a commuter train on a Monday morning with their suitcase.

Soz little commuter pals; I know it’s a dickish move.

I imagine they’ll be silence over here for the next 10 days or so unless I can hook up to wifi then who knows? Although I am going to attempt to do a little internet detox whilst I’m out there cos lol, defs addicted.

Cept we all know I’ll be updating instagram the moment I find any wifi cos I’m weak okay.

Basically I’ll do an internet detox when finding wifi has proved impossible... Um, that counts right?

Good one Kate.

I don’t know what to tell you.

I’m tired and run down with a definite need-a-break-from-reality feeling going on. Which is probably very good timing. But not seeing G for two weeks feels more challenging than I thought it would right now.

But I am also so excited. It’s kinda hidden under the run-downness and the standard holiday prep; is my bag too heavy, where the fuck did I leave my passport, HOW MANY PAIRS OF KNICKERS SHOULD I TAKE? That kinda shiz. But the excitement is there. I’m sure it’ll burst out once we’ve got through the living hell that is airports and flying. When we land in Reykjavik and there’s a ten day adventure ahead of us.

I don’t know what to expect and that makes it all a bit magical.

There really, truly, is nothing like a new adventure.

See ya in ten days babies.

Bubble Bridge

Bubble Bridge

Tired of London, tired of life.

I freakin' hate that saying.

If you're tired of London, it's probably cos the tube has been suspended, because you're so damn sick of breathing in pure exhaust fumes, and spending a small fortune on a sandwich and people being so goddamn rude and why the heck are we all running around everywhere?! I have half an hour to do a 15 minute walk; WHY AM I RUNNING AND SWEATY AND OUT OF BREATH.

Maybe you're tired of London because you just need a flippin' break.

I can't escape London. I love it and I hate it. I wish I could leave yet worry what I'd do without it.

I'm pretty sure I'm in an abusive relationship with a city.

This photo was taken when I'd chosen to be in London. When I'd voluntarily left my flat, got on a Thameslink train ON A SUNDAY and headed into the capital.

I walked from Blackfriars to City Hall, to meet some friends from uni that I hadn't seen in an age. I saw people basking in the sun and I smelt authentic street food. I saw niggledy (is that a word?) little street corners that I would usually ignore and made my way through the crowds without an ounce of irritation. I walked along the water and marvelled at the architecturally-unique skyscrapers reflecting in the Thames. And I saw children running around in the sun, chasing bubbles.

I took this photo on a day when I loved London.

A Year of Blogging

A Year of Blogging

I'm currently typing this on my iPad and bluetooth-connected keyboard. My iPad is lying flat on the sofa, only just in the corner of my eye, and the keyboard is on my lap, physically unconnected. I'm mindlessly writing whilst staring at a darn sexy view of Dartmouth from the top of the valley. I am literally writing with a view. This is when technology is pretty flippin marvellous. It's started to chuck it down outside but that's okay cos I've whacked on G's hoody and a thick pair of socks and the rain falling on the trees outside the bathroom makes it sound like you're in a rain forest when you're in the there with the window open. Pissing in a rainforest. Hashtag life goals.

Anyway.

It's been a whole year (well it will have been by the time you read this) since this little corner of the Internet came into existence.

One whole year.

Kinda making that sound unnecessarily dramatic; a year isn't really that long. But I feel it needs acknowledging; that my blog needs a little wave.

Hiyaaaa babes!

Cos it feels so much longer than a year; how can it have only been one year?! This little babe has somehow managed to get herself so well integrated into my life that I don't believe you when you tell me she's only been around a year. No, you're in denial.

This blog represents a lot for me. This blog represents taking back control of my life after running around flapping and screaming like an actual seagull for over a year and a half after leaving uni. It represents making the decision to focus on the things I love; that I will always be one of those people who works to live. It represents the realisation that it's okay to not have your shit together; that being happy and focusing on the small things is enough.

This blog came about soon after I met G which changed everything. It came about when I realised that writing and exploring and laughing at the confusion and uncertainty were all so much more fulfilling then crying cos I didn't have a career plan or a clue what I was supposed to do.

I'm so glad this blog gave me my writing mojo back, I'm so glad it gives me a space to document and explore this time of life. I'm so glad of its little readership, and how people have taken the time to tell me that my words made them laugh or cry. I'm so glad I plucked up the courage to create this little space.

Happy Birthday A Belly Full of Words; I'm so excited to see what your second year will bring.
