Afternoon tea at Betty's, York

A review of afternoon tea at Betty's in York

When G and I went up to Northumberland a few weeks ago, we decided to stop off in York to see my cousin and her new baby. And then we thought we may as well spend an afternoon in York as well because it is such a beautiful city.

So naturally, the first thing I did was book us in for afternoon tea at Betty’s.

If you want to avoid the queues and have the full Lady Betty afternoon tea in Betty’s, York, you’ll need to pre-book (which you can do online easily). We were seated in the Belmont room upstairs. It’s modelled after the Queen Mary II; the décor and talented live pianist create a feeling of elegance and tradition.

The staff were really friendly and attentive, and made sure we were comfortable and checked if we had any dietary requirements before they started serving us.

We started with a pea, cucumber and tomato cocktail appetiser which was delicious. We could have easily eaten more but it soothed the stomach rumbles so we could relax.

Next up was a mini smoked salmon, cream cheese & dill roulade and a mini pork & apple pie. I enjoy things in miniature far too much (afternoon teas were made for me) so, as well as being really tasty, I thought they were adorable! G is a big pork pie fan and doesn’t share my excitement over tiny things, so he probably wished the pork pie was bigger!

And then it was time for the main event: the afternoon tea tray. Three layers of goodness: mini sandwiches, scones and luxurious desserts.

Our tea also arrived at this point but we let it rest whilst we tucked into the sandwiches, which disappeared in a surprisingly short amount of time. There was Yorkshire ham with tomato pâté, chicken tarragon and egg mayonnaise. I think my favourite was the classic egg mayonnaise although the Yorkshire ham was also very tasty.

Before moving onto the scones, we poured our teas. I ordered a peppermint and G ordered the Betty’s tea room blend. I couldn’t get over how much I loved the peppermint tea, it was by far the best I have ever had; so silky and rich.

There was both a lemon and rose scone, each flavour was subtle but divine. I couldn’t decide which flavour I preferred; the scones were 100% my favourite part of the whole affair (although there was a tense moment when G put the cream on before the jam and I realised he was one of them).

Finally we moved onto the desserts; they were outrageously indulgent both in taste and appearance.

We enjoyed a chocolate & passion fruit cube, a gooseberry macaroon, a pistachio & chocolate dacquoise slice, a fresh berry meringue, a Battenberg and a lemon religieuse – all in miniature of course! They were all gorgeous (although the chocolate & passion fruit cube was a tad too rich for my taste). I particularly adored the macaroon, which had a whole gooseberry inside! And I will always have a soft spot for a Battenberg as it always reminds me of being at my grandparents.

Betty’s is easily the best afternoon tea I’ve ever had, and I would recommend it in a heartbeat.
